Katherine Rundell's Vanishing Treasures: A Bestiary of Extraordinary Endangered Creatures is a book that generates awareness in a hope to evoke change. Hillary Rosner says, "In 22 bite-sized odes to an assortment of creatures, Rundell describes our planet’s living cabinet of curiosities, a gorgeous assortment of wondrous animals deserving of our awe, respect, and solidarity. Through literary references and tidbits of history alongside descriptions of dazzling biology, Rundell conjures a parade of swimming, crawling, flapping, lumbering life. Each tribute is also a plea, and the book as a whole is a solicitation: It’s past time for us to truly see these beings, recognize their majesty, and step up, finally, to protect them."

Botanical Book Club: Meadowland by John Lewis-Stempel

Five sessions: April 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. (handout books and introductory discussion), April 30, May 7, and May 21 from 6 to 8 p.m., May 27 from 6 to 7 p.m. session held at Joslyn Castle. Sound Bathing

6:00pm - 7:30pm

Please note that the summer dates for sound bathing have changed from what was published in the program and events guide.

Join us for a transformative evening of meditation and sound bathing led by Ellie and Matthew Shrader of Shrader Healing. In the garden's great hall, we’ll gather for a deeply restorative experience where you’ll be guided through a meditation designed to help you reconnect with your body. Then, settle into a state of relaxation as you’re “bathed” in healing sounds from gongs, crystal bowls, shruti boxes, flutes, drums, and more. This meditative sound bath creates a soothing, immersive environment that promotes relaxation, mental clarity, and a sense of wellbeing.

A sound bath is a meditative experience where attendees are “bathed” in sound waves. These waves are produced by a variety of healing instruments. This type of meditation doesn’t always have a catchy melody or rhythm one would associate with going to a concert, but instead is a carefully selected wash of instrument and voice with notable resonance and overtones. During the sound meditation, participants lie on their backs—sometimes referred to as the Savasana position in yoga—for the entire experience as Ellie and Matthew weave together sounds which bathe participants as they tune the mind for healing.

Bring whatever you need to get comfortable—yoga mat, blanket, pillow, or eye mask—and let the sound guide you into a state of deep calm. Participants often report feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated after the session. Please arrive 15 minutes early to settle in, and please avoid wearing fragrances to ensure a comfortable space for all. Our chemically sensitive teacher and guests are grateful to breathe freely.

Each session is $45, $35 for garden members. Pre-registration is required. Programs are designed for ages 16+

Basket weaving is an ancient art form that weaves together nature, creativity, and craftsmanship, allowing you to create functional, beautiful pieces that will last for years to come. Join Jeannie Sisson of Woven Keepsakes for a hands-on workshop at the botanical garden, where you'll learn the timeless techniques of basket weaving in a relaxed, welcoming environment. As the workshop’s motto goes, "fun and friendships intertwine," creating not just beautiful baskets but also meaningful connections with fellow crafters.

Each month’s class features a new design theme, so you'll have the chance to create a unique piece based on the current season or botanical inspiration. Whether it’s a charming small basket, a rustic market tote, or something more intricate, all materials are provided, making it easy for you to dive into the craft without worrying about sourcing supplies. Jeannie’s expert guidance will help you through each step, from preparing the natural materials to the final weaving touches, ensuring that you leave with a finished product you're proud of.

In addition to learning a valuable skill, you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of the botanical garden, offering the perfect atmosphere to relax, unwind, and let your creativity flourish. It's not just a workshop; it's an opportunity to connect with nature and fellow creatives while crafting a piece of art that will be cherished for years. Programs are designed for ages 16+
